The market that claims it is “like no other” opens another branch, its largest, just over the Bronx border in Westchester.Fairway Market is opening its sixth and largest store in Pelham Manor, just over the Bronx border in Westchester County, marking the budding chain’s first foray north of the city.
The announcement comes 16 months after the gourmet grocer sold a nearly one-third interest in the company to Sterling Investment Partners of Westport, Conn. to raise cash to open more stores. Since that deal was completed Fairway has inked a deal to open a store in Paramus, N.J. Construction there is scheduled to begin in several weeks, according to co-owner Howard Glickberg.
“If we didn’t have outside equity we’d open a store every three to five years,” he says.
Fairway is also considering locations in the city outside of Manhattan.
At 75,000 square feet, the Pelhman store will be larger than Fairway’s newest location on the waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where it operates a 52,000 square foot store. It also has its original store on W. 74th St. and Broadway plus one on W. 125th St. in Manhattan and another in Plainview, Long Island.
A K-Mart store had previously occupied the space where the Westchester store is planned. It will open in 2010.
