Often mentioned as the nonfiction counterpart to Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, this landmark documentary was Albert and David Maysles’ first attempt at creating a true nonfiction feature in the vein of Capote’s In Cold Blood. The film documents the constant trials of the lives of four door-to-door Bible salesmen as they walk the line between hype and despair. As intimate as it is revealing about American consumer culture, this piece is considered “the direct cinema classic.” In 1992, Salesman was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or asthetically significant.”

The Small Ones

During WWII, the US Army hired the filmmaker’s cousin, Dr. Sandor Lenard, to reconstruct the bones of dead American soldiers. This elliptical work, which resonates as an anti-war meditation, is composed of highly abstracted war imagery and home movies of children at a birthday party.
