From Africa To Harlem With Love

World of Harlem

SojournersSojourner Janet Curley, 49, left, sits in Saint Nicholas Park in Harlem Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, with Lassina Konate, 30, and Ibrahim Cisse, 27, right.

Both men stowed away on a boat from Ivory Coast filled with crates of chocolate and cocoa. An immigration judge had ordered them deported, but because they have no passport or papers, the Ivory Coast refused to take them back. Curley visited weekly during Cisse’s 16 months in detention before being released on parole.
