Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele may have made an enemy of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. Steele, the RNC’s first African American chairman, defended his leadership in an interview with CNN’s D.L. Hughley Saturday, during which the host suggest that Limbaugh was the Republican party’s “de facto” leader. “I’m the de facto leader of the Republican Party,” Steele retorted. “Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment. Yes, it’s incendiary. Yes, it’s ugly.” Limbaugh responded to the comments on his nationally-syndicated radio show Monday, saying that the chairman was off to a “shaky start.” “I hope the RNC chairman will realize he’s not a talking head pundit, that he is supposed to be working on the grassroots and rebuilding it and maybe doing something about our open primary system and fixing it so that Democrats dont nominate our candidates, Limbaugh told his radio audience. “It’s time, Mr. Steele, for you to go behind the scenes and start doing the work that you were elected to do instead of trying to be some talking head media star, which you’re having a tough time pulling off.” Steele, who likely understands the political influence Limbaugh has on the Republican base, quickly backed off of the comments. “My intent was not to go after Rush I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh,” the chairman said in a telephone interview. “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”
