Saturday, March 21, 8pm
The Shabazz Center’s shares its Pan-African sensibilities with DeVeor Rainey, founder and executive director of Speaking in Rhythms, the comprehensive music program for youth in East Harlem that exposes them to the richness and diversity of their own cultures. After learning the rhythms and songs of, and then traveling to Puerto Rico and Belize, student head to Peru upon completing workshops in its social and music history, composition and instrumental arrangements. So profound was the experience one of the students, Matt P. stated, “Being in Belize for a little over a week has made me get a real feel of the Garifuna culture. Compared to New York , everyday activity is less hectic, and more relaxed. I’m thankful that we stayed by the coastline to feel the cool breeze. Sometimes the heat was unbearable for me, but I managed not to let the heat get to me. Socializing with the youth so close to my age showed me that we are basically the same. We have the same interest in music, sports, and other things.”

Theater / Teatro: Melissa Waddy-Thibordeux’, Ain’t I A Woman?
Tuesday, March 31, 11am
Sojourner Truth comes to life through the theatrical magic of Melissa Waddy-Thibordeux’, Ain’t I A Woman? Community Works and the Shabazz Center honor a courageous historical figure, Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) whose pointed question at the Akron , Ohio Women’s Convention is ever more resonant in a world beyond the United States of 1851 where it was first heard. Echoing painfully in a 21st Century where ¾ of the world’s women live on $1 a day and are the sole providers for their families and subject to discrimination and sexual abuse. The one-woman play by Ms. Waddy-Thibordeux is enlightening for all audiences and makes an especially great program for students and seniors.

March 1- March 29, 6pm
POTPOURRI! World Women Works Series mission is to highlight the collective links and bonds of women through the theatre-arts; by developing, nurturing and giving voice to new works by emerging and seasoned women writers from the world community. This year’s featured writers are: Sojourna Collier, Anita Gonzalez, Debbi Blackwell Cooke, Barbara Clarke, Kymbali Craig, Rashidah Ismaili, Maria Chisolm, Rebekah Pierce and Precious Jones. Their works represent dramas, musicals, a screenplay and poetry. Directors include: Passion, Stacy Waring and Emory Porter. World Women Works will feature full-length, one-acts, Ten-minute plays, Family Theatre, and solo works. Most of these voices are new, some are established but still on the fringe; it is part of our mission to pair a writer with a dramaturge to lead a Q & A after each reading to help the writer get closer to her vision. We invite producers to come view their works.
POTPOURRI!

Exhibit / Exposición: The Lonely Soldier Monologues: Women At War In Iraq
March 5 – March 22, Thu – Sat, 8pm & Sun 3pm
An energetically acted example of journalism as theater explores some issues that deserve more attention. Plays and films have parsed the war in Iraq from all sorts of angles – the justifications for American involvement, the treatment of wounded soldiers, the tactical mistakes – but comparatively little has been heard about the increased role of women in the military operations.

Performance / Actuación: B’doun Wag’h by Nader Sadek
Friday, March 15, 6:30pm
Sadek’s new performance piece, B’doun Wag’h (a follow -up to the exhibition “Faceless”, 2007), provocatively incorporates Middle Eastern design, Death Metal music, and Darfur activism. Death and Black Metal Musicians Steve Tucker (formerly of Morbid Angel), Flo Mounier ( Cryptopsy) Nick McMaster (Krallice), and Mike Lerner (Behold… the Arctupos) will play a specially commissioned set written by Tucker on a stage featuring Middle Eastern elements that ambiguously resonate with the occult iconography of this underground music scene. Woodwork screens and geometric patterns that frame blistering guitars and frenetic drumming blur configurations of private and public, holy and profane, ritual restraint and impulsive aggression.

Juried exhibition of Photographs, Photography based Mixed Media, New Media, Film and Video inspired by misconceptions and truths of Latina identity. What are the archetypes regarding Latina/Hispanic/Chicana women? Is she Carmen Miranda with a basket of fruit toppling over, perhaps the hot and spicy like the actress Jennifer López is alleged to be by the accounts of mainstream media; or is she the local cleaning woman or nanny quietly facilitating the lives of the affluent. Who is she? Where has she been and where is she headed as the soon to be new female majority here in the United States of America ?
