City Controller William Thompson picked up the backing of Rep. Charles Rangel Saturday in his mayoral bid.
At a news conference, the veteran Harlem congressman praised Thompson for his “outstanding ability to reach everyone in the streets.”
“He truly represents our great city from river to river,” Rangel said.
Thompson said he was honored to receive the backing of a “historic figure.”
“We’re going through tough times,” he said. “We need someone in City Hall who will fight for working New Yorkers and the middle class. That person is not Michael Bloomberg.”
Earlier in the week, Thompson picked up an endorsement from former Mayor David Dinkins.
Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn) has not officially declared his candidacy and has hinted in recent weeks that he may sit out the race.
Meanwhile, the Bronx Democratic Party announced Saturday it’s endorsing Thompson in the Democratic primary for mayor. It also endorsed Melinda Katz in the controller’s race and and Councilman Bill de Blasio for public advocate
