This 1949 photo released by Herman Leonard Photography, shows Billie Holiday cooking a steak for her dog Mister in her apartment in Harlem. The photographer, Herman Leonard, said she came to the door wearing a simple house dress and an apron and ‘First I thought, this is the maid.’ But it was Holiday, one of the greatest voices of modern time, whom Leonard would continue to photograph throughout her life.

This photo is so beautiful! It is hard to imagine a dog, so loving, so faithful, so patient that he could stand beside his mistress cooking a steak for him.
