The Board of Education Makes a Comeback

The law that gave Mayor Bloomberg control of city schools expired at midnight. That means the Board of Education is back. Earlier this morning, the five borough presidents gathered at Gracie Mansion to determine their appointees; the mayor also makes two appointments. The newly reconstituted board’s first meeting is expected to take place at noon today. Their first order of business will be a vote on whether to keep Chancellor Joel Klein on the job. So far, most of the borough presidents have said they want to keep the system stable, but Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz would not commit. The seven-member board includes:

First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris (Mayoral appointee)
Deputy Mayor for Operations Edward Skyler (Mayoral appointee)
Dr. Dolores Fernandez (Bronx Borough President appointee)
Carlo Scissura (Brooklyn Borough President appointee)
Jimmy Yan (Manhattan Borough President appointee)
Deputy Borough President Edward Burke (Staten Island Borough President appointee)
Deputy Mayor for Education and Community Development Dennis M. Walcott (Queens Borough President appointee)
