Governor Paterson Announces RFP For Healthy Food/Healthy Communities Initiative

A request for proposals from potential program administrators has been issued for the $10 million Healthy Food-Healthy Communities Revolving Loan Fund program to help develop food markets in underserved communities in NYS and increase availability of nutritious foods in areas lacking access to fresh food markets. Youth Action Programs and Homes, Inc. AmeriCorps Class of 2009-2010 Recruitment

Youth Action Programs and Homes is recruiting young people for its 2009-2010 program. The objective of the full-time, 10-month program (late September-June) is to facilitate the transformation of unemployed, out of school, low-income young adults, ages 18-21 by providing an incentive to continue on to post-secondary education as part-time AmeriCorps Volunteers. Participants will have the opportunity to earn an $1,800 education awards for college or trade school. Click here to download an application. City Planning Commission Public Meeting on NYC’s FRESH Food Store Program, August 5th, 10:00 am, Spector Hall (22 Reade Street, Manhattan).

Museum for African Art & SummerStage Present Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and nathantrice/RITUALS dance theater, Friday, August 7 (8-10pm), Rumsey Playfield in Central Park Enter @ East 69th Street / 5th Avenue

DCDC grounds their work in the African American experience. Choreographer Nathan Trice employs a diverse ensemble to create neo-noir dance theater works. nathantrice/RITUALS dance theater performs a new work loosely inspired by the cross culture movement of “Abstract Expressionism and Film-Noir” to ultimately create a sort of neo-noir dance theater piece that takes a witty, messy, sexy look at courtship. This event is FREE.

A tale of adventures in the open seas, the quest for good fortune, and the thrill of moving out into a brand new world. In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a cargo steamboat carrying hundreds of Puerto Ricans detains its course. Turmoil erupts, the captain is held hostage and the passengers raise their voices above the ocean’s roar. Performed in Spanish & English. Lunch will be provided.

Free Sandbox Dance Program, August 11, 2009 2:00pm – 3:00pm, at Robert Bendheim Playground (East 100th Street)

Michael Wimberly teaches us to play electrifying rhythms on hand percussion instruments and to create your very own African-inspired dance. This six-part program was made possible by the Mitsui Foundation as part of the 2009 Mitsui Family Days. No music or movement experience required; just bring your sense of adventure and imagination! In 1609, the plants and animals living on Mannahatta could fill all of the requirements for sustenance locally. But how does NYC, today the nation’s largest and densest city, feed itself? Join us for a screening of “24 Hours, 24 Million Meals: Feeding New York City,” a documentary produced by The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that examines the complex choreography of distribution—from luxury restaurants to soup kitchens, from City Harvest to New Fulton Fish Market—that keeps New Yorkers fed. Bomba + Plena with Alma Moyo Thursday, August 20 from 6:30 – 8:30pm El Museo del Barrio 1230 Fifth Avenue @ 104th Street

Rooted in African traditions, Bomba y Plena is a political and spiritual expression through percussion, song and dance. The bomba was played and danced in clearings of Puerto Rico’s sugar cane fields, town plazas, and during Catholic festivals. Today the music lives on in the work of Alma Moyo, a 13-member musical group whose electric rhythms invite hours of non-stop dancing. FREE ADMMISSION for all audiences. Space is limited, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Young Lords Party 40th Anniversary and Reunion, August 23rd @ 12 pm, First Spanish Methodist Church on Lexington Avenue and East 111th Street

From Vicente (Panama) Alba – On July 26th, 1969 the Young Lords officially held it’s first event as an organization of young Puerto Rican revolutionaries. Although the overwhelmingly majority of the young women and men who founded the organization, or subsequently joined, did not understand it at the time, “the rest is history.” Former members of the NYC branch invite you to commemorate the 40th anniversary. “Visions of Action, Impact and Legacy,” is the theme for the event. Behind the Lens: New York City’s Shelter Dogs Sunday, August 23 • 2:00 PM at the Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street

Photographer Charlotte Dumas will speak about her portraits of NYC shelter dogs, followed by a discussion with handlers from Animal Care & Control of NYC about their work in rescuing, caring for, and finding homes for homeless and abandoned animals. Picture the Homeless Set Up Tent City in Vacant Lot; 10 Members Arrested During Protest Action

On July 23rd, members and supporters of Picture the Homeless people orchestrated a spirited occupation of a warehoused (vacant) property inEast Harlem, turning a fenced-off grassy lot into a “vibrant Tent City – a place to call home.”
