SUPER SABADO! Target Free Third Saturdays at El Museo AROUND THE BLOCK FROM EL MUSEO

Super Sábado spreads throughout El Barrio! This month, our fun-filled, full day of free programs will take place at different locations in our neighborhood, before it comes back home to El Museo for late afternoon activities. Come join us for gardening at 103rd Street Community Garden, an art making workshop at the Graffiti Wall of Fame, a poetry performance at the Pedro Pietri mural, gallery tours at El Taller Boricua, delicious $1 lemonade at the East Harlem Café, and much more!

Join us in our local community garden to learn about growing cilantro and basil with the New York Restoration Project – then plant your own seedling and take it with you!

Comedian Víctor Cruz reads Quinito’s Neighborhood by Ina Cumpiano, and Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold, two great stories about growing up in New York from a child’s perspective.
HANDS-ON WORKSHOP: Bookmark making

Decorate your own bookmark with materials provided by La Casa Azul Bookstore, including paper, glue, and old magazines!
POETRY PERFORMANCE: A tribute to Pedro Pietri! / Poesía: ¡Tributo a Pedro Pietri!

Modesto Flores Garden – 104th Street and Lexington Avenue
Artist Bonafide Rojas recites a selection of Pedro Pietri’s poems at the corner of El Barrio’s local hangout East Harlem Café, followed by a poetry workshop where you can write and perform your own poem. El artista Bonafide Rojas recita una selección de poemas de Pedro Pietri en la esquina del East Harlem Café, seguido de un taller de poesía donde puedes componer y recitar tu propio poema.
Learn about El Barrio’s history from El Museo’s tour guides stationed at this location. Guías del Museo ofrecerán información sobre la historia del Barrio en esta locación.
GUIDED TOURS
Taller Boricua – 106th Street and Lexington Avenue

Taller Boricua offers docent-lead 45 minute-tours of their art installations, including audiovisual work “Everybody likes to Dance” by Las Hermanas Iglesias, where you can learn dance moves by following the printed footsteps.
HANDS ON WORKSHOP: Postcard Printmaking Workshop

Graffiti Wall of Fame at Central Park East High School – 106th Street and Park Avenue
Participant can make their own print design postcards led by artists from Art for Change using Styrofoam and pencil.

Inspired by art collective Asco, featured in El Museo’s Phantom Sightings exhibition, tape yourselves to the wall and have your ‘instant mural’ picture taken. Once you’re back home, you can view and share your photos online at Flickr.

YOUNG RHYTHMS: Opus 118 Harlem School of Music

Enjoy a melodic performance by the children of Opus 118 Harlem School of Music, a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 by Roberta Guaspari with parents, teachers, and volunteers.

OH SNAP! Young Powerful Voices at Work
4:30pm – 6:00pm, El Taller
Local arts collective The Peace Poets host a series of spoken word workshop for teens. Participants create poetry, and immediately afterward perform for the public as part of El Museo’s spoken word series SPEAK UP! SPEAK OUT!

SPEAK UP! SPEAK OUT! with The Peace Poets
6:30pm – 8:30pm, El Café
Meet The Peace Poets—five brothers from Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Their mission: to expose youth in poor communities worldwide to poetry and spoken word. The youth workshops they conducted at El Museo this Spring culminate in this evening of socially-conscious edutainment.
