Calvin Martin

As Chair of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Harlem next month. Here, the 69-year young Calvin Martin reflects on his life as a cancer survivor, his inspirations, his reaction when he found out he had cancer and his advice for survivors.

HW: What was your first response when you found out you had cancer?
CM: Surprised, stunned didn’t think it would happen to me.

HW: What was your families reaction when they found out you had cancer?
CM: Most of my family was not told, my wife and mother were the only ones I told. They were very supportive

HW: Has your philosophy of life changed?

CM: Certainly, I now realize how important the gift of good health is. Additionally I feel obligated to educate, support and inform those whom I come in contact with.

HW: What’s your advice to someone who has just found out they have cancer?

CM: Make sure that you explore all of your treatment options. Talk to people who have gone through this ordeal, make sure you do what’s required to live an active and productive life after treatment.

HW: Who has been an inspiration to you?
CM: My family and my urologist Dr. Brian Stone.

HW: What is your most treasured possession?
CM: Good health and my family.

HW: What’s the best thing about life?
CM: Tough question, Knowing that God has defined your purpose and that He has left you on this earth to fulfill a mission

HW: What should friend and family members do to support cancer survivors?
CM: Encourage them by letting them know that having cancer is not the end of life. May sure that they follow the advice given by their physician.

HW: What advice would you give someone who does not have cancer and think it could happen to them?
CM: Maintain or develop a healthy life style and pray.

HW: What’s your favorite place in Harlem?
CM: Convent Avenue Baptist Church
