Rangel Charged With Ethics Violations

Politics

A House committee today charged Congressman Charlie Rangel with multiple ethics violations today.

The panel will now send the case for trial.

A separate ethics panel will decide whether the allegations against the 20 term Democrat can be proved.

The charges stem from an investigation into Rangel’s finances, his use of multiple rent-stabilized apartments, and his efforts to raise funds for a City College center.

Rangel stepped down from the chairmanship of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee last March after the ethics committee criticized his conduct in a separate case.

Sources tell the Associated Press that Rangel’s attorney tried to broker a settlement with the committee to end the case.

That settlement would have required Rangel to admit he violated ethics rules.

Hearings are scheduled to begin next Thursday.

Statement From Congressman Charles Rangel

“I was notified today, two years after I requested an investigation, that the Ethics Committee will refer the allegations reviewed by an Investigations Subcommittee to a Subcommittee that will review the facts. I am pleased that, at long last, sunshine will pierce the cloud of serious allegations that have been raised against me in the media. I will be glad to respond to the allegations at such time as the Ethics Committee makes them public.”
