On July 25, 2010, Target officially opened in Harlem. The Target is located in East Harlem between 116th and 117th on Pleasant Ave.

Early in the morning guests arrived and waited on line to be the first to begin shopping. The first 2,500 guests to enter the store received a free New York Target rolling bag. While there have been other events at the store leading up Sunday, the store was not actually opened for shopping.

On hand to do the official ribbon cutting were Matthew Washington (Chair of Community Board 11 of Manhattan), Thelma Golden (Studio Museum ), Michael Basiden of 98.7 KISS FM’s Michael Basiden Show, Target’s Senior Vice President Derek Jenkins, Target’s District Team Leader Julian Canas and Target’s Store Team Leader Rob Stermann.

Before things got underway we had a quick second with Target Spokesperson Jenn Glass who confirmed a few key points. The first Manhattan Target has created 400 jobs at all levels in the store. More than 50% of the jobs are filled with applicants in the immediate Harlem area with the remaining positions being filled with residents from throughout the rest of the City.
