On August 5th Brooklyn came out in full force to see the Grammy Award winner John Legend perform at the free Seaside Summer Concert Series, hosted by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. Before the show started, Markowitz announced that the legendary Aretha Franklin has cancelled both of her Brooklyn concerts due to an injury. However, plans are already being worked out to have her perform next year in Brooklyn.
Around 8pm there were few VIP seats left as the crowd began to pack in the perimeter of the performance space. The calm Thursday night was interrupted by the thunderous applause when John Legend stepped on the stage. His unique voice and soulful sound was on full display for a little less than 2 hours.
Legend had the crowd grooving and singing along to every song. Ordinary People, Wake Up, Doing It Again, Everybody Knows and Dreams are some of the songs that could be heard on Surf Avenue in Coney Island. But Slow Dancing was the song that led Legend to invite a dance partner to the stage. He selected a beautiful, tall, brown skinned woman from the audience. Clearly, she would have stayed on stage for the rest of the show, but Legend kindly let her return to her seat with a rose when the song was over.
Although no one was ready to go, the green lights above the stage came on leading Legend into Green Light featuring Andre 3000. After an encore, the show was over and the audience left the park singing their favorite John Legend songs of the night.
