Remembering Soul Singer Solomon Burke

Soul singer Solomon Burke has died at the age of 70. Though not as well-known as his contemporaries Marvin Gaye and James Brown, Burke did have an impact on generations of musicians. Rumor has it he was a hustler, so much that when he was at the Apollo Theatre he sold chicken on the side of the stage to performers. His trademark song was “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,” covered by the Rolling Stones and sung by Dan Aykroyd in the Blues Brothers movie. Another song he’s known for — “Cry to Me” — was featured in a key scene in the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing.

  1. An amazing talent, but what a carbon footprint this guy left, with 21 children and 90 grandchildren consuming the planet’s resources! If everyone populated as he did, we’d be huddled like penguins on every bit of planetary land within one generation.

We’re lucky each of HIS children only averaged slightly less than five of their own…

  2. Bill,

Your right on….sleeper talent for some of us.
