For a century, historic Church of the Intercession (Broadway at West 155th Street) in Washington Heights has welcomed Christmas with the reading of Clement Clarke Moore’s beloved poem, ’Twas The Night Before Christmas. On Sunday, December 19, 2010 at 4:00 PM, during a candlelight service with carols, actor Malik Yoba will invite children to gather around and listen as he recites this classic holiday verse. This will mark the 100th Anniversary of the reading at Church of the Intercession. The reading will be followed by a lantern procession and wreath-laying at the author’s gravesite in nearby Trinity Church Cemetery & Mausoleum and a hot cocoa reception in the Cemetery’s Chapel.
Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863) was the son of Dr. Benjamin Moore, the sixth rector of Trinity Parish. In 1822, as a Christmas present for his six children, Clement Moore wrote the poem that became a classic for all to cherish.
Malik Yoba is best known for the Fox TV series New York Undercover, the Disney film Cool Runnings, and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too?
