East Harlem’s La Marqueta’s marketplace, located at East 115th Street and Park Avenue, started back in the 1950′s, it grew to more than 400 vendors and suffered its own down turn. Today, the East Harlem market is having a rebirth and they’re giving the public an opportunity to see and experience it in an Open House on February 2!
See you at La Marqueta!

La Marqueta was an already an estabished and prosperous instatution when my parents and I migrated from Puerto Rico in the early 1940. My family grew to include two sisters, aunts uncles and cousins. We all lived in El Barrio and shopped at La Marqueta for everything. La Marqueta covered the area under the Metro tracks at Park Avenue from 116th street and ended at 112th. It was enclosed and you encountered vendors offering fresh produce, meats, seafood and dairy products as well as groceries!!! If that was not enough La Marqueta, brought together in one central location, ered a thriving vast network of merchants who offered the surrounding ethnic communities whatever type of merchandise that it needed. Glad to share my memories, it was something to behold, QUE VIVA LA MARQUET!!!
Thank you
