Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, A Dance Company celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the company with seven performances of at the Joyce Theatre, Tuesday February 8 through Sunday February 12. Artistic Director/ choreographer Ronald K. Brown is offering two programs, a total of seven works, which are joyously performed by nine-member ensemble. In addition to works from the company repertory Brown is presenting a world premiere entitled On Earth Together set to the music of Stevie Wonder.
The work is a departure from Brown’s trademark high-energy music collage style. In a program note Brown states, “On The Earth is a thank you to Bessie Schonberg, a mentor who required me to keep my word; Dr. Sherrill Berrymam Johnson, a friend and colleague who required that we all step up and do our work; and Alice Brown, my mother, who taught me to strive to be love in the world. This is a wonderful opportunity to express gratitude to these women who continue to guide so many others and me.”
The entire evening was a loving, and in many respects a reverent tribute to the human spirit. Brown’s work amalgamates movement from Western dance styles and the African Diaspora. In no way has Brown simply borrowed movement but has mended them- reminiscent of the Persians who combined cooper and tin to created bronze. It is steeped in the spirit of our ancestors, a unique living, breathing moment- a true dance continuum.
