American Apparel head Dov Charney has been accused of many things over the course of his sordid career: Masturbating in front of a reporter, ripping off Woody Allen, sexually harassing his employees. But this is the first time he’s ever been sued by a teenaged sales associate for sexual assault.
According to the lawsuit, Charney singled out the employee when she was 17 and working at one of his stores. He demanded that she tell him stories about her sexual history and send him explicit photos, and told her that she would have to have sex with him as soon as she turned 18 if she wanted to advance within the company. The high-school student was so shaken up by his behavior that she had to be hospitalized from a nervous breakdown. When she told Charney about it, he increased his harassment, making her work longer hours without extra pay.
Finally, on her 18th birthday, the employee arrived at Charney’s apartment to find him in his underwear—again, according to the suit. He forced her to perform oral sex on him twice. As per a quote from the lawsuit in the Daily News, “She was then, to all intents and purposes, held prisoner in the apartment for several hours and forced to perform additional sexual acts.” The suit demands $260 million (per the NYDN; the Post has $250 million) in damages, arguing that the victim has serious psychiatric issues stemming from the attacks.
