Today would have been the 84th birthday of Coretta Scott King , wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The staff at Harlem World Magazine wanted to take a moment to honor her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement.
Every January we honor the achievements and reflect on the legacy of Dr. King–and we should—
… but his achievements would not have been possible without the strength, encouragement, and personal sacrifices of Coretta Scott King. Honestly, ask yourself, would you support your husband’s efforts if it meant your home being fire bombed, always being concerned about the safety of husband, children and yourself, living under surveillance and your phones being tapped by J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI, receiving death threats and hate mail and knowing it could end with his murder? Would you do it just because it is the right thing to do and your efforts would be embraced by some, scorned by many, and resulted in long separations from your spouse?
Coretta Scott King did. She marched with him, and we honor her.
Thank you Mrs. King.
