On June 23 2011, patchwork artists from Harlem and Russia will collaborate on a unique quilt presentation at the National Arts Club. The exhibit, titled “Pieced Together, Moscow Meets Harlem,” is the centerpiece of the Russian American Foundation’s 9th annual Russian Heritage Festival. “This exhibit is the weaving together of one cultural fabric,” says Marina Kovalyov, president of the Russian American Foundation.
“Despite the distance of our ancestral homes and our differences, Russian-American and African-Americans chronicle our life’s legacy through the art of quilting.”
“Pieced Together” marks the first time Russian-American and African-American artists Laura R. Gadson, owner of The Gadson Gallery, Ife Felix and Michael A Cummings (to name afew) have joined forces in an exceptional display of cross-cultural identity. And it is also a continued celebration of the American Folk Art Museum’s “Year of The Quilts.”
Over two dozen quilts will showcase the diversity and exuberance of some of the most talented Russian and African-American crafts and fiber artists. Handmade craft works will be on display during the weeklong exhibit, which begins June 23, 2011 and culminates June 30, 2011.
(HW note: this is a great project, support the show so that future exhibits travel to Harlem.)
