On June 30, 2011 the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) will host a Jazz intensive with legendary musician Roy Ayers, San Francisco ’s Jazz Mafia Symphony, and several local music programs. The two-day event includes master classes, workshops, and an open rehearsal on Friday, July 1 at 6pm. The Jazz intensive will culminate with the students, Roy Ayers and Jazz Mafia performing at SummerStage on Central Park ’s Mainstage on Saturday, July 2 at 7pm.
The Jazz intensive participants include the HSA Jazz Band, Jazzmobile, Opus 118, Special Music School and MS 180. The budding musicians will immerse themselves in Jazz knowledge and performance experience. The pre-selected students will be placed into string, percussion, brass/winds and vocal ensembles, all in preparation for their grand performance in front of over 5,500 attendees to SummerStage.
Judith Insell, HSA’s Director of Music says of the collaboration “I applaud the combined forces of Roy Ayers, The Jazz Mafia Symphony, and SummerStage for making it possible for our talented music students to perform alongside masters of the Jazz art form. It is a pleasure to have musicians from New York City ’s local performing arts schools join HSA.”
The free and open rehearsal on Friday evening will offer the opportunity for the musicians to practice original pieces by Mr. Ayers, and will include all 40 Jazz Mafia members and 30 students from the community.
As a bonus, a Jazz Intensive Kick-Off opening reception will take place this evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in the HSA Courtyard with entertainment provided by pianist Romain Collin. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served along with wine provided by Harlem Vintage. For ticket information, visit my.hsanyc.org.

The kids were great at Summerstage – the young boy on the keys has a big future – shame about the awful idea of the promoter to have Roy Ayers backed by a pocket less, soulless band who destroyed his music, bad tempos and absolutely no groove…I’ve never been to a Roy Ayers show and seen an audience who just didn’t dance, normally you can’t help but move it’s so funky…hate these promoter concepts which are an insult to the audience and even more to the musicians – how did Roy’s band feel being shut out of his bday show at Sumemrstage (and losing a payday!).
In regard to the above response: wtf are you talking about??? I was there, this band had deep pockets, lots of soul, and Roy himself had nothing but good things to say about it. You obviously have no ears, you moron.
Thank you Roy Ayers and Jazz Mafia Symphony for working with the children and giving them the chance to perform on the big stage with you guys..Matt and the kids had a great time!
