The YMCA Is In The Zone, The Literacy Zone In Harlem

Literacy is a cornerstone of community strength and resilience. After a highly competitive grant process, the YMCA of Greater New York was awarded a grant from the NYS Education Department to create a literacy zone in Harlem. The grant will support and expand the Y’s programming in CDs 9, 10, and 12 encompassing Central and West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Manhattanville and Washington Heights.

Literacy Zone is a reform initiative developed by the New York State Board of Regents and the State Education Department to close the achievement gap in urban and rural communities of concentrated poverty and high concentrations of families and individuals with limited literacy or English proficiency. The grant supports the Y’s mission of social responsibility.

The new YMCA Literacy Zone joins 14 existing and 10 new literacy zones in New York City and will provide ESOL and Citizenship Preparation, ABE and Computer Literacy, GED, and Family Literacy free of charge.
