Earthquake in Harlem Rocks Hotel Theresa (Update)

Wow, we just had the first earthquake that I’ve felt in Harlem. I’m from the west coast, so I know an earthquake when I feel one. Our office is in the Hotel Theresa, this one rocked the Hotel from left to right for a number of minutes.

As I write this piece we still have people outside on 125th Street standing and waiting for what to do next. And you can hear fire engines running up and down the streets going who knows where.

I’m just hearing on BBC radio that it was felt as far down as Washington D.C. and reported to be as high as a 5.9!

UPDATE: 11 million people have reportedly felt the shake but there has been no word of any injuries so far.

A 5.9 earthquake may be no big deal on the West Coast but here on the East side of America it caused a panic around 1:15 p.m. ET and lasted for about 30 to 45 seconds.

The quake was centered near Mineral, VA but was felt in Washington, New York City, Rhode Island and North Carolina. Government buildings in New York were evacuated and The Pentagon in D.C was evacuated as well.
Doug Kammerer, meteorlogist with the NBC affiliate in Washington, calls the tremor a “very big earthquake for our area.”

  1. I’m on 135th Street and our building shook back and fourth, my wife was jumping in the tub, I had to tell her to get out of the tub wrong disaster, our daughter was heading for the door, she was out, 11 and knew something wasn’t right, she said mommy I don’t like this. We felt tremors before in Harlem this is the first time it shook the building and the photos off the walls. Scary stuff.

  2. When will we take our environment serious and do more to preserving it. It is trying to tell us something and we keep ignoring the signs. No I don’t feel we are going to fall off in to the ocean but lets get a little more respectful and see what changes we can personnaly make.
