Nick and Valarie was our Black Camelot before President Obama and Michelle because they were the ambassadors of LOVE, family, romance, energy, determenation, business and gave us love songs that you embrace on a spring day as you ride down Pacific Coast Highway. My all time favorite song is “Ani’t it a Shame” and the beautiful intro by Nick. I saw them several times throughout their career but the most memorable performance was 1978 in Fort Worth,Texas at the Tarrant County County Convention theater. Two hours of professional entertainment which was awesome!
My wife and I finally made it to the Sugar Bar last June and had I good time even though Nick and Val did’nt come by that night. Nick and Valerie are love twins forever and he will miss him dearly. I see Valarie playing ‘Bourgie Bourgie” on the piano while Nick is smiling and jamming. We will keep Valarie and is daughters in our prayers.

Whilst in the midst of trying to process everything this past Thursday evening, a brave Valerie Simpson emerged from her personal grief, to do what she does so extraordinarily at the Sugar Bar’s “Open Mike Nite.” What ensued that evening in word and song, celebrated the life of Nick Ashford, the homegoing of Nick Ashford and the birthday of Valerie Simpson. Needless to say, a multi-emotional evening was had by all, including Val. We even had a little churrrrch!
As part of the “Sugar Bar Family” (you know who you are) sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers go out to Val, their daughters and family. May God continue to bless you, as every day is a blessing!
Tis hard to fathom a visual of an ever gracious Nick not being at his table in the Cat Lounge on Thursday evenings. Rest in peace Nick Ashford.
My condolences and prayers go out to you Valerie, your daughters and the whole family for your loss. The music industry as well as your many fans has also suffered a major loss that will leave a void that can’t be replaced. I personally have been a fan of Ashford and Simpson for many years, starting in the early 70′s. Be strong, and May God’s Mercy and Grace be with you during this time of sorrow.
NA, A truly graceful man. RIP
When I read of Nick’s passing I was in shock, it was as if I lost a friend. I grew up on your music, the music that you two made will last forever throughout the entire world. You two were destined to meet one another and the world saw the results, such a great songwriting team you two were and a great stage presence together. I am sorry for your loss. Be strong Valerie, we love you.
Thanks for the informative updates!

R.I.P. Nick. You’ve been an inspiration to every one of us. Thanks GOD for letting us have him for this short time. Valerie you now have a BIG SOLID ROCK, his name is GOD. Trust in him. GOD also called on my husband to come home after 38 years of marriage, he to had cancer. We got married in 1965. I still love him just like I did the day we got married. GOD is good. Valerie you know that, you and Nick met in CHURCH. Stay strong, you have alot of people who are willing to be there if you need them. Dear GOD please Bless this family. Amen

Valerie, thank you for sharing with us the beautiful poems and love songs that you and your devoted husband,Nick, inevitably shared with your fans..
There are always lessons in life and in passing. Nick taught us how to love, imagine and be free in song. For Val and the family…although the loss is great, know that the power within you is greater than the power that’s in the world. Continued blessings.
Will surely be missed. My condolences to Valerie

SING, NICK, SING ! ! !
My deepest sympathies for your very sad loss.
Words alone cannot begin to express my disbelief and sadness on hearing the news of Nick’s death.
Ashford and Simpson songs will always be dear to my heart as I grew up with their music.
His passing is a very sad time not only to family and friends but also to fans and the music world. His demise will leave a hug dent in the lives of many but he will live on through his music and memories.
RIP Nick Ashford. My family and I had the pleasure of meeting you and your beautiful wife Valerie at the Sugar Bar many times when my daughter Tori Diaz sang there at open mics. You’re a legend. I’ve always loved your music and it was a privilege to meet you and have Valerie sing backup for my girl. Found a Cure is still one of my favorite songs. So sad.
my deepest sympathy goes out to Valerie and the rest of the family. we have lost a legend. not only in the music community, but the community of mankind. I had the honor of working with nik and I just want the community to know that there’s not many like him. his place among us will leave a void for years to come. his passing marks a changing of the guard in the music industry. and it gets weaker every time a great artist passes. Valerie I love you and the family. Nichols, sleep well my friend.

As a professional photographer is never gets better when you have the opportunity to meet and photograph your favority singing duo. I had that pleasure. Several years ago at the ArtScape in Baltimore Maryland, I had the pleasure of meeting Nick, Val and Monique behind stage before their performance.
As the duo walked on stage, the ladies roared. Val in her cool, calm way simply said, “Ladies, Ladies. He’s all mine.” And the show started. Being a photographer and at the front of the stage, I got to witness the performance of a lifetime. Several pictures I took that night are proudly displayed in the portrait gallery of my website (www.EsquirePhotos.com).
Thank you Nick and Val for sharing your lives and music with us, Val continue to be strong and Nick, GOD bless and may you rest in peace.

It’s September 10th and I have had time to think of the history that was made when God allowed both Nick and Valarie to grace the planet. Nick you have taken Val as your wife and for yearts the two of you have made beautiful music together. You have displayed to young black men and women that together if two walk hand in hand and share the passion of their heart together longevity and a committed marriage can work…you guys are proof of this. I just want to thank God for giving us Nick Ashford and all the music that He allowed Nick to create and give to the world. Valarie and Nicole and Monique God has called home His angel but have allowed you as family to experience His love through your husband and father. I would like to thank you girls for sharing a beautiful black music genius with all of us. May God continue to hold you up as a family during this dark time. Yes, you are “Solid as a Rock”!
