Singer Cee Lo Green will make his big screen acting debut in a planned remake of movie musical Sparkle, which includes American Idol winner Jordin Sparks in the title role of an aspiring music star, and Whitney Houston as her mother.
The original 1976 film, about three Harlem, New York-based sisters who form a group in the late 1950s, before finding fame as a girl group. Their sudden rise, however, unravels their personal lives. The cast is set for a revamp with Sparks as the title character and Houston in a starring role – her first acting job in more than 15 years.
Now the F**k You hitmaker, who has previously only worked on TV and in animated movies – like the upcoming Hotel Transylvania – has also been tapped for a featured part in the project.
Derek Luke and Mike Epps round out the cast. Director Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom) will helm the film from a script penned by his wife Mara Brock Akil (The CW’s Girlfriends). Director Salim Akil will take charge of the film, while R&B icon R. Kelly will provide the score.
