Today, around 11 am I walked over to 5th Avenue, between 120th and 119th Streets to check out The Harlem Mile, which is the final and best leg of the ING NYC Marathon. The runners run over the 138th Street bridge down to 5th Avenue heading to Central Park to the finish line.
The race was amazing, a great display of human will and determination by each and every runner (notice the Ambulance waiting in the shadows).
The folks from WBLS and Dr. Bob Lee were in the house encouraging runners who picked up water and bananas along the final mile.
Some runners had more trouble then others….
Some runners even ran with with a smile…
Many runners showed their true colors…
A few walked around prepared for anything…
One of Harlem’s finest working the toughest job…
And the trickle of the final runners.
The race was won by Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya won the men’s race in 2:05:06. Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia won the women’s race in 2:23:15, and her countrywoman Buzunesh Deba, who trains in the Bronx, finished in 2:23:18.
Harlem World Magazine was Media sponsor of first time runner Luce Ortiz’, Ms. Ortiz raised money for Team For Kids and met her goals, both in fundraising and in completing the race.
Hey Harlem, are you running next year?
