Louis ”Satchmo” Armstrong, was one of the greatest musical artists of the 20th century, and he never recorded a Christmas album. “Satchmo” moved to New York City in 1929 from Uptown New Orleans, where he played in the pit orchestra of Hot Chocolate, written by Andy Razaf and pianist, composer Fats Waller and stealing the show with his rendition of “Ain’t Misbehavin’”, his biggest selling record to date. Later, he worked at Connie’s Inn, chief rival to the Cotton Club, gangster Dutch Schultz and composing with his old friend Hoagy Carmichael in Harlem.
In the 1950′s he recorded an album’s worth of Christmas songs, as singles and album tracks. The compilation of those singles and tracks make up the What A Wonderful Christmas and Christmas Collection albums (re-introduced in 1997).
One song we especially love in this mix is A Christmas Night In Harlem, a celebration of Harlem and great Jazz by Louis Armstrong cut for Decca Records. This rare track is about the best bit of jazz and pop Christmas music about Harlem as you’re gonna find.
And, we love cover shot.
