The Harlem-founded Weusi Artist Collective Weusi, a Swahili word meaning blackness, is a distinguished collective of artists established in 1965 against the backdrop of the Black Arts Movement who made African iconic imagery and symbols a central part of their work. The Collective came together in a historically fertile and often turbulent period in our nation’s artistic, cultural and political landscape—a time where the invisibility of African and African American artists and widespread misrepresentation of black culture were the norm.
