The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, along with several Harlem-based organizations, has announced plans to host the Second Annual National Urban Health Conference, a four-day event taking place from February 23-25,2012.
The theme of this year’s conference is urban ecology and its impact on our communities, with a focus on improving the health of urban ecosystems through research, education, family, and community action.
Conference topics will focus on environmental health issues, asthma, nutrition, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s, spiritual and financial health, the health of our children and seniors, and holistic education.
Sponsoring organizations include The New York Academy of Medicine, the City College of New York, Harlem Hospital, Touro College’s School of Health Sciences, and Emblem Health.
The conference will feature panels and discussions on traditional and non-traditional health topics—including asthma, environmental impact, men’s health, women’s financial health, domestic violence, youth violence, and spiritual health—that adversly affect people living in urban areas. Congresswoman Donna Christensen, D-US Virgin Islands, will deliver the keynote address. Rep. Christensen is the first female physician in the history of the U.S. Congress, the first woman to represent an offshore territory, and the first woman Delegate from the United States Virgin Islands.
Other distinguised speakers and panelists will include Lisa S. Coico, PhD, President of the City College of New York; Jo Ivey Boufford, MD, President of The New York Academy of Medicine; Denise Soares, Executive Director, Harlem Hospital; Mindy Fullilove, MD, Professor, Mailman School of Health, Columbia University; Neville Parker, PhD, Department of Civil Engineering, City College of New York; Kenneth Adams, President of the New York State Economic Development Corporation; and Darry C. Towns, President/CEO New York State Homes and Community Renewal. Thomas Farley, MD, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Hazel Dukes, President of the New York State Conference of the NAACP, will receive the Dr. Muriel Pettioni Award for their many accomplishments in the field of community and urban health.

Focus: Domestic Violence and “Our Youth vs. Our Youth”
The National Urban Health Conference is a signature event of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce’s Harlem HEALTHY Living Initiative created to help Harlem residents and people in communities across the nation to live healthier and more productive lives.
