Harlem Church is still ‘Rolling for Jesus’

Spiritual leader: The Rev. Michel Faulkner, former New York Jet and president of The Institute For Leadership.

Address and neighborhood: 245A W. 135th St., Harlem

Years in present location: One year. “ We started at the Harlem Lanes in June 2006,” Faulkner said.

Size and character of congregation: “We have approximately 70 regular attendees. Multiethnic: 50% African-American and 50% Latino. We have a large number of young families. Approximately 50% of our congregation are men,” Faulkner said.

Scheduled services:

Sunday: Worship at 11 a.m.;

Wednesday: Bible study at 7 p.m. and Men’s Prayer Walk from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.; Friday: Youth service at 7 p.m.

What makes the congregation special: “We have a strong number of multiethnic families. The average age is about 30, but people of all ages are made to feel welcome and are welcomed,” he said. “We started in a bowling alley and have been rolling for Jesus ever since.”

Largest service and turnout: 300, “During our Martin Luther King celebration a few years ago,” he said.

Most-prized possession: “Our love for God and for our community,” he said.

Biggest wish-list item: “For a music director,” he said.

Proudest moment: “During our Martin Luther King event, because we were able to honor leaders in the community,” he said.

Biggest issue: “In our efforts as we work to try and empower a new generation of leaders to change the culture through changed lives,” he said.

Most-memorable service: “Three days prior to the service of our third anniversary, we had all our audio equipment stolen, so we did not think we would be able to have a service. We were so blessed to have New Beginnings Community Church of Darien, Conn., come to our rescue and provide us with a sound system and sound technicians at the last minute. Their pastor, Rob Cassara, came in as our guest speaker, that Sunday,” he said.

Best singer: “The Rev. Lee Rouson, former New York Giant,” he said.

Most-dedicated volunteer: “Rouson, who is also our associate pastor. He drives 100 miles every Sunday for service in all weather conditions,” he said.
