Five people were shot late Wednesday night in Harlem.
The shooting happened at the courts on West 155th Street and Eighth Avenue during the annual Entertainers Basketball Classic, which has featured numerous NBA superstars.
“They started arguing, about a bad call or something like that,” said Rodney Harris, 47 told the NYDaily News. “The guy was standing no more than five feet away from me. He pulled a gun out of his pocket and shot once. He then shot one more time. Everyone started running.”
A video from World Star Hip Hop shows the scene right before the shots ring out, causing the videographer to gasp, “Oh! Oh!” with each one. The shooter then crossed the street and decided to fire a few more times. “Then he just walked away,” Harris said. “He didn’t even run.”
Police were still at the scene into the early hours of Thursday morning. The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Nate Robinson, a former point guard for the Knicks, was at the game but escaped unscathed, witnesses said.
All of the victims were taken to area hospitals and are expected to survive.
Police say the shooting may have resulted from a dispute during the game, but they’re still investigating.
It’s the second shooting at a basketball tournament this week. On Sunday, 4-year-old Lloyd Morgan was shot dead during a gunfight at a charity basketball tournament at the Forest Houses.
Wednesday, 17-year-old Rondell Pinkerton was charged with murder, attempted murder and gun possession. Another suspect, 26-year-old Courtney Kelly, faces weapons charges in the case.
The shooting comes as Mayor Michael Bloomberg has called out President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney to spell out their specific gun policies.
Bloomberg, who has long lobbied against illegal guns and gun violence, stepped up his rhetoric in the wake of the massacre in Aurora, Colo.
Editor’s note: We don’t understand why this is happening when security checks are supposed to be done on each person before they enter the park.
Why do you think Harlem is having some many shooting now?
