We found this amazing Youtube recording of former slave Ison Mosely from Texas as he talks about his life and feelings regarding life as a slave in the south.
Listen carefully as Mr. Mosely talks about his family, slave owners, the process of manufacturing mollasses, weaving and soap, and the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.
The tape reminds us of how far we have come and yet it reminds us of how far we have to go. Mr. Mosely reminds me of my grandfather and the stories he never told and the life he lived outside and inside his home in Athens, Alabama.
More of these tapes can be accessed at the Library of Congress and look up “Voices from the Days of Slavery” and you will find many more former slaves recordings.
