Ricardo Laing charged for attempted murder in Rucker Park Shooting

A Westchester County hardhat who wounded five people — maiming one — during a dispute in the stands at a basketball tournament in Harlem’s legendary Rucker Park was indicted Thursday for attempted murder, assault and weapons charges.

Ex-con Ricardo Laing, 24, who served time for a weapons possession conviction, was rooting for a Westchester team when he got in an argument with other spectators at the Entertainers Basketball Classic July 25, Manhattan prosecutors say.

He is accused of shooting wildly into the crowd, hitting four people in the arms and legs. The gunfire sent the crowd, which included ex-Knick Nate Robinson, fleeing for their lives. A fifth person was hit in the chest and has since lost feeling and some use of his arm and hand, prosecutors say.

Laing was arrested five days later.

“The defendant is charged with turning an annual summer event into one now remembered for senseless gun violence,” says District Attorney Cyrus Vance.
