On January 20th, 2012 the White House announced a tourism initiative intended to make the United States (its states, cities and villages) the most visited country in the world.During a speech delivered from Disneyworld the president outlined components of the initiative which includes quicker issuance of tourist visas from burgeoning countries including China and Brazil.
The new visa policy is being managed by the Department of Homeland security and the State Department.
The president’s strategy for boosting international travel and tourism includes a marketing push.
President Obama justified the expense as part of a job creation effort noting the United States had 60 million international visitor in 2010 generating over $134 billion in income adding tourism is the number-one service we export.
Brands USA Ex-CEO Jim Evans testified to the US Congress , “With international travel accounting for 7% of total U.S. exports and 25% of U.S. services exports, it is more important than ever to promote international visitation to the United States.”
The daily White House press briefing led by Jay Carney occurred on a jet en route to Disneyworld in Orlando Florida. ( Full Transcript).
According to Obama’s speech , 60% of international tourists are allowed to travel without the extended visa process and the initiative promises to increase quicker access for international travelers , removing barriers to entry, this year.
