This December, the Apollo Theater will present a series of holiday programs designed to celebrate family, culture, music, comedy and community. Throughout its legendary history, the Apollo has consistently been a model of innovation and excellence, and a creative catalyst for Harlem, the city of New York, and the nation. This year’s holiday programming represents the range and vibrancy of the Theater’s artistic offerings.
Highlights of Holidays at the Apollo include:
· Ballet Hispanico – the nation’s premier Latino dance company – returns for a second year to the legendary Apollo Theater with live music by the Paquito D’Rivera Ensemble. Three company premieres put a contemporary spin on Cuba’s danzón, Argentina’s tango, and 1980s Spanish pop. December 1st
· Apollo Amateur Night Holiday Special is the 3rd Annual event under the Theater’s signature program, Amateur Night, showcasing recent winners of the show’s “Apollo Stars of Tomorrow” category. Performers range in age from 11-18. Special guest artists: The OMG Girlz.
Coca-Cola will provide some holiday fun under the Apollo’s iconic marquee offering a Coca-Cola Winter Wonderland - variety of holiday-themed activities, choir performances and a visit from Santa. Free and open to the public. December 15th
· Kwanzaa Celebration Regeneration Night is the Apollo’s annual event, now in its 6th year, honoring the principles of Kwanzaa through music and dance. Featuring celebrated dance company Abdel Salaam’s Forces of Nature Dance Theatre. December 28th

Event: Thanksgiving Celebration Starring Faith Evans & Tank
Multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning recording artist, New York Times best-selling author and now star of the hit Docu-series television show “R & B Divas,” Faith Evans makes her return to the Apollo Theater stage to perform live in concert just in time to kick off the Holiday season. With a performance that will really give audience members something to be thankful for, Faith will perform many of her classic hits such as “Soon As I Get Home,” “Gone Already,” “You Used to Love Me,” as well as future favorites like her new single “Tears of Joy.” Performing live with the diva will be R&B singer, songwriter and producer Tank, rising star Luke James and RocNation singer Bridget Kelly.

Event: Ballet Hispanico
The dance event of the holiday season on the legendary Apollo Theater stage features three Ballet Hispanico premieres that put a contemporary spin on Cuba’s danzón, Argentina’s tango, and 1980s Spanish pop. Vibrant live music by the Paquito D’Rivera Ensemble accompanies choreography by Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro, Argentinean legend Alejandro Cervera and cutting-edge Spanish choreographers Inma García and Meritxell Barberá. Celebrating 42 years of dance and culture, Ballet Hispanico is recognized as the nation’s premier Latino dance organization. Led by Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro, the Company boasts a rich and diverse repertory of over 100 works by the foremost choreographers and emerging artists of our time. Comedian Sinbad returns home to the Apollo stage for one night of family fun and big laughs. Sinbad is internationally known for his appearances in hit movies like Jingle All the Way (playing opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger), Houseguest (co-starring the late Phil Hartman) and Necessary Roughness. He has starred in the television sitcom, A Different World, as well as his own series, The Sinbad Show. He also served as host for the popular television program Showtime at the Apollo. Sinbad has drawn legions of fans from his highly-rated HBO comedy specials such as Brain Damaged, Afros & Bellbottoms, Son of a Preacher Man and Nuthin’ But The Funk.

Event: Chris Tucker
Comedian and actor Chris Tucker will make a triumphant return to stand up comedy with his Guess Who’s Back Tour presented by AEG Live. As part of the tour, Tucker will take the Apollo Theater stage for two nights on Thursday, December 13 and Friday, December 14 at 8pm. Hailed as one of the funniest comics in the industry, Tucker is no stranger to the Apollo stage. At the beginning of his career, Tucker performed at Apollo’s legendary Amateur Night and would come back to the Theater several times throughout his career. This performance will mark the comedian/actor’s first time headlining a show at the legendary Theater.

This Amateur Night themed Music Café will feature vocalist Lynn Loosier. No stranger to the Apollo Theater, Looiser is the kind of artist who can sing any style of music from jazz to blues to R&B to gospel to country to rock. With her silky smooth voice and soulful renditions her sound has been described as “blue-eyed soul.”

Event: Apollo Amateur Night Holiday Special featuring Apollo Stars of Tomorrow
The legendary Apollo Theater lights up this holiday season with the Apollo Amateur Night Holiday Special, the 3rd Annual event under its signature program Amateur Night, showcasing recent winners of the show’s “Apollo Stars of Tomorrow” category. Featuring an incredibly talented array of instrumentalists, singers and dancers from ages 11-18, this program captures the spirit of young performers all hoping to follow in the footsteps of Apollo Legends like Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald, whose careers were launched on the stage of the Apollo. Hosted by Capone.
Stars of Tomorrow Performers include: Solomon Hicks, Arianna Hanson Dempsey, Tiffany Obi, Austin Paul, Jr., Lianah St. Ana, Andrew Malabunga, Matthew Whitaker, Hannah Richardson, The Midas Touch and Michael Woodard.
Special Guest Artist: The OMG Girlz is a teenage girl singing group whose current members include Bahja “Beauty” Rodriguez, Breaunna “Baby Doll” W. and Zonnique “Star” Pullins. The group was formed by Grammy Award winning Singer/Songwriter, Tameka “Tiny” Harris, formerly of the multi-platinum girl group, Xscape. The OMG Girlz have quickly risen in popularity with their hit “Gucci This (Gucci That)” and have been featured on BET’s 106 & Park and as part of the Scream Tour with Diggy Simmons in 2011.

Coca-Cola Winter Wonderland
Before the show, the Apollo and Coca-Cola are partnering to bring the magic of the Holiday season to Harlem. Under the Apollo’s iconic marquee, Coca-Cola will offer a variety of holiday-themed activities and performances free and open to the public. The festivities include picture taking with Santa Claus, giveaways and performances by some of New York City’s best choirs. Additionally, in the spirit of giving, the Apollo will be a designated location for a toy drive. Hosted by Billy Mitchell, Apollo Theater historian and tour director.

Event: Sweet Honey in the Rock
Sweet Honey in the Rock, the internationally renowned all-female a capella ensemble, will star in a one-of-a-kind holiday season concert on the legendary Apollo stage! This concert marks the first time this Grammy Award winning troupe, will headline at the Apollo and will celebrate music from many faiths and religions around the globe through stunning vocals rooted in the rich textures of African-American legacy and traditions. With American spirituals, a Latin, Chinese, African and Hebrew influence, this program honors the holiday spirit from Christmas to Kwanzaa.

Event: Kwanzaa Celebration: Regeneration Night
The Apollo Theater celebrates Kwanzaa with its popular annual show, featuring therenowned New York-based dance company Abdel Salaam’s Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, guest performances by the Songhai Djeli and Flute Visions and Queen GodIs and members of the Harlem Children’s Zone/Forces of Nature’s Youth Academy. Since 2006, the Apollo has established an annual show to celebrate this holiday tradition on one day of the Kwanzaa holiday. The Apollo’s celebration is a joyful evening of dance and music honoring the principles of Kwanzaa—family, community, and culture. Hosted by radio personality Imhotep Gary Byrd.
