Throughout the years, Harlem bred hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has dabbled in a little bit of everything. He’s established his own recording company, launched his own clothing and fragrance line, created his own liquor brand, opened up a chain of upscale restaurants and is planning to launch his own television network. Combs has inspired people from the Harlem community and beyond, showing them that dreams can become reality through determination and hard work. Last week Combs was honored at the 3rdannual National Action Network’s Triumph Awards for all of his accomplishments.
The National Action Network Triumph Awards honors individuals who have not only made strides in their respective professions, but have had a positive impact in their communities as well. Combs provided a humble speech after receiving the award. “When you get a chance to get honored with an award, especially an award of this magnitude, it truly makes you reflect,” he said. He mentioned how his success at a young age stunted his personal growth, and when he had children he realized that it was time for him to make positive changes in all aspects of his life.
During his speech he paid homage to pioneers of social change that came before him, and discussed their influence on hip-hop culture. “I had to honestly look at those have come before me and the responsibility that they’ve taken on, have took on, and honestly spawning me and a generation of young people like me to just feel like the things we were able to do, we were able to do it just through the hip-hop spirit and the hip-hop culture.”
He also expressed his appreciation for Rev. Al Sharpton, the founder of NAN, and mentioned how he has always turned to Sharpton for advice during his most troubling times. Combs credited Sharpton for inspiring him to use his platform as a way to give back.
