Harlem’s Community Boards, East to West, Support Harlem Literacy Day, Dec 1st

Fellow Harlemites:

As of last night, all three community boards representing HarlemManhattan Community Boards 9, 10, and 11–have overwhelmingly passed resolutions encouraging Harlemites to participate in Literacy Across Harlem Day …… on December 1st, 2012! Envisioned and coordinated by Total Equity Now, Literacy Across Harlem Day asks all Harlemites, east to west, to carry reading materials outside of their bags the first day of every month in order to share, promote, and celebrate our individual and collective identities as readers, writers, and learners.
Team TEN is grateful to the members of each board who participated in and/or supported the “Literacy Across Harlem March, Book Donation & Community Celebration” that we co-organized in July, and we’re encouraged by the growing number of board members and other Harlemites participating in the ongoing Literacy Across Harlem Day movement. . . . After all, a resolution is just a piece of paper (or a digital file!) expressing support for or opposition to something that affects our community. It’s community-driven action–the fulfillment of the pledge or commitment embodied by a resolution–that actually strengthens our village. Like you, Harlem’s community boards are taking action to promote literacy, learning, and community-building through Literacy Across Harlem Day.
TEN extends a special thanks to CB9 Chair Rev. Georgette Morgan-Thomas, CB10 Chair Henrietta Lyles, and CB11 Chair Matthew Washington for their leadership in this effort. TEN also thanks education committee chairs Winston Majette (CB9), Jennifer Prince (CB10), and Hector Nazario (CB11); CB9 Arts & Culture Committee Chair Joyce Adewumi; and their respective committee colleagues for their leadership, constructive feedback, and support.
Please mark your calendar for December 1st (Literacy Across Harlem Day #4!) and stay tuned to www.facebook.com/totalequitynow and www.twitter.com/totalequitynow for updates on how you can work with TEN and our community partners to put more books into the hands of Harlemites for the holidays. And as always, don’t forget to #RockThoseReads!
Some say it takes a village. We say #ItTakesaHarlem.
Many thanks,

Joe Rogers, Jr.
