“The Souls of Black Girls,” Film And Talk In Harlem

Dear Neighbors,

The Harlem/Washington Heights Education Film Screening & Community Discussion Series–hosted by Total Equity Now (TEN), Community League of the Heights (CLOTH), and The A.M.E. Zion Church on the Hill--invites you to a special film screening and intergenerational discussion on ways our community can support the educational and holistic development and achievement of girls and young women of color.

“The Souls of Black Girls”
Monday, November 19, 6:00 PM
2005 Amsterdam Avenue (btwn 159th and 160th)
2nd Floor, Community Room
#1 train to 157th St./C train to 163rd St.
Recently, a lot of attention, energy, and resources have been invested in encouraging and supporting our Black and Latino boys and young men, and rightfully so. However, if our neighborhoods are to reach their full potential, educationally and otherwise, we must attend just as carefully and thoughtfully to the needs and aspirations of our girls and young women. Indeed, the two are inextricably intertwined.
“The Souls of Black Girls is a provocative news documentary that takes a critical look at media images–how they are instituted, established and controlled. . . . The documentary features candid interviews with young women discussing their self-image and social commentary from Actresses Regina King and Jada Pinkett Smith, PBS Washington Week Moderator Gwen Ifill, Rapper/Political Activist Chuck D, and Cultural Critic Michaela Angela Davis, among others. The Souls of Black Girls is a piece that attempts to provoke honest dialogue and critical thinking among women of color about media images and our present condition-internally and externally.”

If you parent, teach, mentor, attend school with, work with, believe in the potential of, and/or are a girl or young woman of color in Harlem or Washington Heights, we look forward to learning from and with you on the 19th. As always, this screening and discussion is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
