MTA Holding Public Hearings On Proposed Fare Hikes

The MTA is holding a series of public hearings on proposed fare hikes. The MTA is considering four different fare hike proposals for the subway and bus system. The agency said it’s necessary to raise rates to pay for costs it doesn’t have control over, like debt service, pensions, energy and employee and retiree health care.

All public comments made by letter, email, testimony or via videotape dropped off at MTA stations or offices will also be condensed into a transcript for board members.

Hearings will be held Tuesday at Baruch College in Manhattan and at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. Both will begin at 5p.m., but registration for speaking slots begins at 4 p.m.

Hearings will be held Wednesday on Staten Island and in Orange County. More will be held Thursday in Queens and Westchester.

The MTA board will vote on December 19. If approved, the fares will go up in March of 2013.
