Walter’s World: Dance And More Dance after Sandy

Well I’m back and so are my electricity. The water has finally receded and lower Manhattan and the boroughs are getting back to normal. This weekend the city is dancing uptown downtown and all over town. Here are a few of the events taking place around the city and in our community.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet returns to the Joyce Theater through November 25. For its Joyce season, the company performs two new works by Dwight Rhoden, including the New York premiere of The Curve, an abstract, conceptual full company work set to an eclectic score and the world premiere of Subject To Change, set to the music of Rockjazz virtuoso ELEW, which features unique renditions of songs by artists such as Linkin Park and The Bravery. The program also includes the New York premiere of Flight, a male duet choreographed by Jae Man Joo and set to Johann Sebastian Bach and the world premiere of Memories by Camille A. Brown, which is set to an original score and was commissioned by The Joyce Theater Foundation with the support of the The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Repertory favorites like Testament, On Holiday, and a new production of Pretty Gritty Suite, set to the music of Nina Simone, add to four thrilling programs.

Purelements an evolution in dance will present two performances on November Friday 16 and Saturday 17, 7:30pm at the Kumble Theater on the Long Island University downtown Brooklyn Campus. Co directors Kevin A. Joseph and Lakai Worrell and their company of 15 dancers will offer a diverse amalgam of contemporary dance and dance theatre works.  Worrell will premiere Portraits inspired by images by renowned African American artist Romare Bearden.

On Saturday November 17 Philadanco will sponsor their 2^nd Annual Dance Marathon Pajama Jam Fundraisers. The 24- hour dance/pajama party starts at 5:00 p.m. on November 17, and ends on 500 p.m. November 18 at the Philadelphia Dance Company located at 9 North Preston Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Participants are asked to, “bring your favorite P. J. s and see how long you can hang.”  Last year’s winner is challenging all contenders to outlast him. Win prizes every three hours for your participation while you raise funds for Philadanco and a grand prize for the last contender.
