We’re not sure when The Harlem photo studio started and ended on the South West corner of 124th Street and Third Avenue in East Harlem, but based on these photographs we think it was somewhere around the turn of the 19th century.
The photograph of 20 year old Hungarian born Eva Schmidt above was taken at The Harlem photo studio reports the website Joseph F. Berweiler Family Chronicle. Eva’s floor length bustle Victorian dress is very conservative with a lace collar, loose fitting and puffy sleeves as a new East Harlemite one year after her arrival in America in 1884.
The photograph of the anonymous couple above taken at The Harlem studio illustrate a more relaxed Victorian Harlem style. He is fitted in a black hat, tailored coat, and her more informal look with a black and white feathered hat, a fitted dress without puffs and a fox around her neck makes her a East Harlem fashion plate.
