  1. Sounds to me like the writer here is biased toward the opinion that there is something wrong with not having a bank account. A bank account is impossible to maintain for someone living from paycheck to paycheck as they need all of their money and cannot allow their account to run down to zero or have a negative balance without incurring significant charges. For these folks, turning a check into cash and managing their finances with cash it a much more attractive alternative to being surprised with hidden fees and regular insufficient funds charges they are hit with when they try to use banks. By the way, industry research shows that over 50% of the people using check cashing outlets have a bank account and that the largest competitor to a check cashing outlet is a bank with regard to where checks get cashed.

  2. There is a false assumption here. For many low income citizens, check cashing fees are less than bank charges. For customers who do not maintain balances, many banks charge higher fees. What’s more, bank fees are not transparent and often come off the ‘back end.’ There are many stories where an unexpected charge causes a check to boucne which leads to a cascade of costly events. For many people, banks are the high cost alternative to check cashers. The person who pays $125 a year to a bank is few and far between.
