The Empire City Savings Bank at 231 West 125th Street was one of the beautifully designed buildings in Harlem just after the turn of the 20th century. With its clean lines and symmetrical design the Empire City Savings Bank was a thing of beauty in West Harlem built in 1920 by Wurts Brothers.
The New Times reported Empire State Savings Bank “… Adds to the value of the Appearance” in Harlem (drawing below is from the article):
… a structure which in dignity is the equal of any edifice of any building of similar size in the city. And greatly superior in architectural beauty to many.
The new scaffolding over the facade of the new banking building has just been removed, and the improvement in the block is distinctly noticeable.
The photograph was taken when Harlem had cobblestone streets, grand façades and massive arched doorways akin to the Arc de Triomphe of Paris.
A new face was added to the front facade on September, 15, 1921.
