If you’re the type of person who can appreciate the thought of bottle of Dom Perignon, although your budget is more in line with a six pack from a great craft brewery such as Atlanta‘s SweetWater Brewery, Scion made the FR-S just for you. It’s sexy, it’s sleek and a blast to drive! In fact the more you drive it, the more you’ll want to drive it—it’s just that fun!
On my first day behind the wheel, I was a little unsure about the feel, having just stepped out of a full size luxury SUV with performance values. But once my memory track had rid itself from every trace of the larger heavier vehicle—which happened very shortly after my discovery of FR-S’s “Sport” driving mode option, it was on like popcorn!
FR-S maneuvers well and handles superfluously. It has the ability to stick right with you, wherever you decide to go or do–it’s on you like white on rice! Lightweight but quite steady, thanks in part to being so low to the ground and therefor gravity centered, allows this baby to soar, thanks to the power of all 200 horses under the hood. Together they produce 151 lb. ft of torque, all coming from a 2.0 liter, four cylinder boxer engine made by Subaru. The big engine propelling this little whip, harnessed by a six speed automatic tranny, results in a fuel economy average of 28 miles per gallon (25 city/34 highway). Funny thing is, the manual tranny and also a six speed, comes in at an average of 25 miles per gallon (22 city/30 highway). The only possible drawback (depending on how you look at it) is the premium fuel requirement.
There is no push to start and you’ll need to click the remote to lock and unlock the doors. Still that wasn’t nearly as bad as the sacrifice of no XM Satellite radio (Ok, I’m a news junkie—BIG DEAL!). But, in the defense of FR-S and all of the above virtues it brings to the table, with my new Blackberry Bold Bluetooth’d, I had the option to stream music from Pandora or the music loaded from iTunes, into Blackberry Music. So by the end of day one, I was as happy as a lark, smiling from ear to ear while racing from point a to point b, c, d and more!
