Home Depot is aiming to build up its staff, hiring 10,000 more workers than last year for its spring season as the housing market heats up.
The retail chain is anticipating stronger sales when the weather warms and homeowners start in on their home improvement projects.
In total, the company said it plans to bring on 80,000 part-time and full-time employees — 14% more than it hired in 2012 — for what is usually its busiest season of the year.
The hires will include 3,500 workers in New York and New Jersey.
The spots are largely temporary ones, but “we find some of our best associates during our peak season, and many of them have built long, meaningful careers with us,” Tim Crow, Home Depot’s executive vice president of human resources, said in a statement.
The world’s largest home improvement retailer slashed thousands of jobs after the recession.
But a recovery in the U.S. housing market, which has been bolstered by low interest rates and improving home values, is helping reverse the fortunes of home-related retailers.
Rival Lowe’s is boosting its seasonal hiring by 13% this spring. It announced plans in January to add 45,000 part-time seasonal jobs and 9,000 permanent ones.
Home Depot said it is encouraging technical school and college students to apply, as well as retirees and military veterans. The retailer recently launched an online tool for vets that helps match their prior training and skills with jobs within the company.
