A hearty group of Touro College Graduate School of Social Work students and faculty members recently participated in the HOPE 2013 Homeless Street Survey, which estimates the number of unsheltered individuals living on the streets, subways, parks, and other public places.This effort enables the agency to measure its progress each year in reducing the numbers of homeless and also determine the allocation of resources in each borough, according to Commissioner Seth Diamond. The post-midnight survey also helps raise awareness about the importance of volunteer work, inspiring volunteers to help the homeless or others in need not only during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays but 365 days a year, said Commissioner Diamond. In participating in the event, Touro’s seven volunteers upheld a long-standing school tradition of recognizing a need and heeding the call to respond to it. “I always know that Touro is going to be here, and it’s comforting to know that,” said the Commissioner.
