Police are investigating the discovery of a body inside a barrel in Harlem.
Police confirm a Harlem grandmother called 911 on Saturday night about a foul odor coming from her grandson’s room at her home on 2400 Seventh Avenue near West 140th Street.
Authorities later discovered a 55-gallon drum with a body inside, sources said.
The clothed body was stuffed inside the drum, so police weren’t immediately sure whether the victim was male or female, sources said.
The cause of death is not yet clear, and police are currently looking at a person of interest.
Neighbors said the victim was a woman who lived in the apartment.
“When I came from downstairs, there was a lot of cops, police, yeah, a lot of police,” said one neighbor. “They was asking people, ‘Do they live here?’ They wasn’t letting people into the building. They was asking for IDs.”
“This is crazy,” said another neighbor. “I know the people in the building. I would never think this would happen. They were very nice people.”
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing.
