116th Street, West From Eight Avenue, NY 1880-1920′s

A wonderful photograph looking west on 116th Street looking towards Columbia, in the Morningside Heights area of West Harlem, NY.

It’s amazing how stripped bare the streets are, no trees, no square boxes to grow plants, as the trolley car makes a right from Manhattan Avenue onto 116th Street. On the block behind the trolley stands the ice man delivering ice in a horse carriage to a resident. The lush group of trees in the middle is Morningside Park sandwiched between Morningside Drive and Morningside Avenue.

Also, as we look in the distance to the right, we see the top of Columbia University buildings, and the top of Grants Tomb as it sits in the shadows on 121st Street and Riverside Drive.
