50 Years Of Cultural Heritage Celebrated At Loíza Festival 2017 In El Barrio

With a three-day event, the Annual Festival [easyazon_link identifier=”1881715647″ locale=”US” tag=”harlemworld-20″]Santiago Apóstol de Loíza[/easyazon_link] in El Barrio celebrates a half century of African influence of the Puerto Rican and Latino immigrant communities settled in New York City.

Now in its 50th year, the event also known as Loiza Festival in El Barrio will celebrate its anniversary milestone bringing the traditional costumes, live bomba, plena and salsa, dance, handcrafts, and foods that celebrate the Puerto Rican community in New York. This year, the festival will feature a special street naming in honor one of the founders Aida Perez, who died in 2012 after a life of bringing Afro-Latino history to NYC streets. Performances by Milteri Tucker & Bombazo; Mateo y Cumbalaya; Bronx Charanga, Son del Monte, Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez (of the Tito Puente orchestra), Legacy Women, Los Pleneros de la 21, Nelson Ramirez y Herencia de Mi Tambo, and Flaco Navaja & The Razor Blades, among many others. Bomba y plena, salsa, handcrafts, and foods rooted in Afro-Puerto Rican fare transported festival goers to the city of Loiza, Puerto Rico, founded by “cimarrones” or maroons.
